 Pomegranate
(Punica granatum): Recently acclaimed for its health
benefits, pomegranate (known as the “jewel of winter”) may
contain almost three times the antioxidant potential as green
tea or red wine. It is rich in potassium, has vitamins A, C and
niacin and is high in fiber. Pomegranate is rich in ellagic
acid, a phytochemical that is much higher in pomegranate than in
other fruits such as apples and pears. Other polyphenols is
pomegranate include anthocyanins and punicalagin (a hydrolysable
tannin found almost exclusively in pomegranate, it breaks down
into ellagic acid). These are all very powerful antioxidants
that clinical trials have shown can help maintain healthy blood
vessels and healthy LDL cholesterol levels and support normal
blood pressure levels. They may also help defend your body
against cancer.
