 Mangosteen
(Garcinia mangostana): Named after the French priest and
explorer, Laurentiers Garcin, the Garcinia Mangostana or
Mangosteen is thought to have originated in Southeast Asia.
Evidence shows that mangosteen reduces inflammation in the
musculoskeletal system, its powerful antioxidant properties
benefit the cardiovascular system and its anti-viral,
anti-parasitic and antifungal properties aid the immune system.
The main active compounds in mangosteen are called xanthones, a
group of compounds that have powerful antioxidant, anti-bacerial,
antifungal, anti-tumor activity. Lab (animal) tests show, so
far, that mangosteen compounds have activity against several
cancer cell lines including breast, liver and leukemia. The rind
or”pericarp” contains the active xanthone compounds. Xanthone
compounds include mangostin, mangostenol, mangostenone A,
mangostenone B, trapezifolexanthone, tovophyllin B, alpha and
beta-mangostins, garcinone B, mangostinone, and the flavonoid
epicatechin. |
