 Bilberry (Vaccinium
myrtillus): Bilberry is rich in phytochemicals. Used since
the middle ages, bilberry was used for its astringent, tonic and
antiseptic properties and in the management of diarrhea,
dysentery, hemorroids, gastrointestinal problems and various
infections. These days, bilberry is used to treat various eye
disorders and promote general cardiovascular health. The most
important phytochemical present in bilberry is the flavanoid
anthocyanoside. Its rich mixture of phytochemical glycosides
include Cyanidin, Delphinidin and Malvidin. These phytochemicals
possess powerful antioxidant qualities that have shown to
improve night vision and overall visual acuity during the day.
They also help prevent macular degeneration and are vital to
general cardiovascular health.
