 Beta Glucan
(oats): Beta-Glucans are a form of natural soluble
dietary fiber found in such foods as barley, oats, corn bran and
mushrooms. Purified beta 1,3/1,6 glucan is what is usually sold
in supplemental form. Beta-glucans activate certain white blood
cells called Macrophages. In this way they appear to intensify
the immune system’s ability to fight off infection. Produced by
the marrow, Macrophages patrol the body gobbling up foreign
invaders such as bacteria and fungus but must first be
activated. Beta-glucans activate these immune cells. Beta-glucans
may reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer. The
FDA allows companies like Quaker Oats to claim that their
product helps reduce the risk of heart disease as long as
certain levels of beta-glucans are present. Beta-glucan may also
help people with allergies, skin inflammations, pre/post
chemotherapy, people with extremely active or stressful
lifestyles and athletes. |
